FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How far will you travel?

There is no limit to where we will travel for a great story! We love to travel, and shooting in new locations is always exciting and inspiring. With that being said, we do charge a small travel fee for weddings outside of our local area.

When/how do I book you and pay for my photos?

For weddings, a non-refundable deposit equal to 40% of your final package price is due at the time of booking. That secures your wedding date in our calendar and covers us for any potential losses if you were to cancel for any reason. The remaining 60% is due within 48 hours of your wedding day. We accept payment via credit card, cash, cheque, or e-transfer.

What is your end-to-end process?

Once you book with us, you are provided with our Planning Stages Questionnaire, a simple and fun form for you to fill out that lets us know a little more about you. We use the answers to develop a plan/timeline for the wedding/session so that we are properly prepared and organized. For the wedding/session, we make sure to arrive early in case we were to run into any issues on the way. Once the wedding/session is complete and we have returned home, we immediately back up all of the RAW images from the day on 2 separate external hard drives. All of the photos are now in 3 different locations (the 2 hard drives and the memory cards). Once the editing process begins, we cull the images. In other words, we search through all of the images to pick out the best photos. From here, we pick and edit a few to deliver to you as "sneak peaks". We then individually edit each of the remaining images in the collection to perfect them. Near the end of this process, we often post a blog of the day on our website. Finally, we deliver the full collection to you via online gallery and/or USB flash drive.

How do you edit and what editing software do you use?

We personally edit all images individually using the the latest Adobe Lightroom software and techniques. We occasionally use Adobe Photoshop as well, if there is something that we simply can't accomplish within Lightroom. We are constantly striving to learn and improve our editing techniques and skills through workshops and other information sources. The purpose of editing is to retouch and enhance each of the images to ensure a style that is consistent throughout the day and that best represents the mood and the couple.

How long after my session will I receive my photos?

Sessions are edited in the order that they take place. Editing takes up a significant part of the photo delivery process, and we take it very seriously. We are perfectionists, and each delivered image is individually edited and fine-tuned by us to represent our style and the feel of the day. The length of time that this takes varies based on the number of images in your package, the time of year, and the other sessions in the editing backlog. To make the wait a little more bearable, we always provide a few sneak peeks and a blog post before the full collection is delivered. Typically, our clients receive their full wedding collection within 4-5 months from the wedding day. Trust us, it's worth the wait :)

When is the best time for my photo shoot?

We love to shoot with natural light. For natural light photography, often the best time is during the last few hours before and shortly after sunset. Photographers call this the "Golden Hour" because of the perfect natural lighting conditions. Shooting at this time also helps us to avoid harsh daytime sunlight, which often results in squinting eyes and shadows. During weddings, we scout out perfect spots that will allow us to avoid the harsh sunlight conditions if necessary. And we always try to take advantage of "Golden Hour" to get some epic sunset photos with you as well.

How long do you keep a backup of my raw and edited photos?

We will retain backups of your raw and edited photos for at least 2 years from your wedding date. Due to the extensive amount of storage space required to store all of the photos, we cannot guarantee that your photos will be backed up beyond 2 years after your wedding date. We advise that once you receive your photos, you take the necessary steps to back up them up as well.

This is where our brainstorming begins. We use the answers to develop a plan/timeline for the wedding/session so that we are properly prepared and organized. How will my films be delivered?

Your edited films will be delivered online and through USB flash drive or external hard drive (depending on the sizes of the files that are provided). Some of your edited films can also be downloaded direcly via our Vimeo page.

What is raw footage? How is it delivered?

Raw footage is the audio and video files straight out of the camera or recording device. Raw footage is provided as is, straight out of the camera, and unedited in any way. We are low-aperture cinematographers, shooting in a shallow depth of field to maximize the cinematic look to the footage. We also need to be very mobile, so we use a tool called a monopod, rather than a tripod. For these reasons, parts of the raw footage can be shaky, out of focus, or moving, as we move in between cinematic shots. Special parts of the day, such as the ceremony and speeches, are filmed both cinematically and using a tripod, resulting in both cinematic shots and stable, continuous shots.

Raw footage is included in your final package on a portable external hard drive, which is included in any of our film or combined packages.

How does the copyright work and who has the rights?

As part of the contract, Sage & Sea Co. retains the copyrights to all of the edited films that are provided. This protects us in case someone were to attempt to make money off of any of our films. We will retain backups of your raw footage and edited films for at least 2 years. Due to the extensive amount of storage space required to store high quality video and audio footage, we cannot guarantee that your raw footage and edited films will be backed up beyond 2 years after your wedding date. We advise that once you receive your edited films (and raw footage if applicable), you take the necessary steps to back up the footage and films as well.
